Suicide Grief Support Group

The Healing Hearts Suicide Grief Support Group will meet from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church. This is a peer-led group offering support for adults grieving a suicide death. Flag Ceremony

The faculty, staff and students of the Oxford-Lafayette School of Applied Technology invite the community to attend the flag ceremony at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The ceremony, presented by the members of the ROTC programs at Oxford and Lafayette high schools, will be held at the school, 134 Highway 7 South.

Oxford Art Crawl

The next Oxford Art Crawl will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Participants will enjoy a night of art and are encouraged to stay for dinner on the Square. Exhibits and receptions are free and participating venues include: Gallery 130 (Meek Hall at the University of Mississippi), the Powerhouse, University Museum and Southside Gallery. Breast cancer awareness

Oxford Medical Clinic will host Pink Lemonade Day for breast cancer awareness from 9-11 a.m. Oct. 26. Area residents are invited to stop by to learn how to help prevent or detect breast cancer in the earliest, most curable stages. ‘Scream Contest’

Soil & Water Conservation District

All members of the community are invited to attend the Lafayette County Soil & Water Conservation District meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 at Lafayette High School Commons. Registration is $10 per person and includes the meal, program and membership. John Ruskey, Quapaw Canoe Company, will present the program, “The Great Flood of 2011 – Memphis to Vicksburg,” along photos, videos and music as he canoed down the Mississippi River during the great flood last spring. Multiple Sclerosis Self-Help Group

LAMAR HOUSE EXHIBITS

New exhibits in the L.Q.C. Lamar House tell the story of the Mississippi statesman’s life against the events and politics of the Civil War era. They can be viewed Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 2 to 5 p.m. Group tours may be scheduled for most days. Malone Design & Fabrication of Atlanta designed the exhibit to enhance the recently restored house. Each room reflects a different period of Lamar’s life and times. Audio excerpts of his speeches are included. The L.Q.C. Lamar House Museum is at 616 North 14th, with the main parking lot on North 16th. Flu Vaccination Clinic

The Lafayette County Health Department will hold a special seasonal flu clinic today until 3 p.m. at 101 Veterans Drive. During this time, health department staff will focus solely on providing seasonal flu vaccinations so that all residents can complete the process quickly and efficiently. Seasonal flu vaccinations for adults are $25. Those 18 and under can receive seasonal flu vaccinations for $10 through the Vaccines for Children program. High-dosage flu vaccinations for those 65 years and older are available for $50. Pneumonia vaccinations will also be available.  Medicare and Medicaid recipients are asked to bring their cards with them to the clinic. Residents may also obtain seasonal flu vaccinations from private providers and some retail pharmacies. Puppet Show

The Lafayette County & Oxford Public Library will present the free puppet show, “Little Bear and the Great Big Pumpkin,” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Reflections on writing, poetry

Beth Ann Fennelly, associate professor of English at the University of Mississippi, will discuss some of the surprises and joys and mysteries that she’s discovered in her writing life at 7 p.m. Thursday in Bondurant Auditorium. Her 40-minute presentation, “A Life with Lines,” will be part poetry reading, part humorous commentary, part encouraging challenge aimed at both those who enjoy poetry and those who “just don't get it.” A question and answer session and reception will follow. OUS Golf Tournament

OUS Community Fall Festival

Oxford University School will host its Fall Festival from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 28 at the school. All families in the Oxford community are invited. The festival will feature food, music, games and a costume contest for the entire family. Catfish plates will be available for purchase for $11 per plate. Take-out plates will also be available. Meal tickets may be purchased in advance by contacting OUS at 234-2200. In case of inclement weather, the rain location will be First Baptist Church Christian Life Center.

Blood drives

United Blood Services, this area's nonprofit community blood provider, will have a few blood drives in the coming days. Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.  Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from parents or guardian. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, a blood drive will be held in the Magnolia Room of Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Ole Miss Spirit Squad will host a blood drive in the Circle at the University of Mississippi. And finally, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 3, the UBS Blood Mobile will be part at the Ole Miss Law School for another blood drive.

More than a Meal Fundraiser

The Merry Market will be held Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Inn at Ole Miss on the UM campus. Attendees will be able to shop at more than 30 vendors from around the South, featuring everything from jewelry to children's clothes to art and more. Tickets for Friday are $15  and the proceeds go to More Than A Meal, the program that provides meals to the economically disadvantaged in the community. Tickets for Saturday are $5 and children under 10 get in free. Baskets will also be set out at the market to accept donations of gloves and hats that will go to guests of the More Than a Meal program. Pictures with Santa will be taken from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Open Mic Poetry

Bozarts Gallery at 403 Main St. in Water Valley will host Fall into Poetry, an open mic event for poets and fiction writers, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday. The open reading will be followed by acoustic music from singer/songwriter Devin Pitts. The event is free and all are welcome to read or listen.

Clothing Giveaway

Regents Autumn Fair

Regents School of Oxford will have an Autumn Fair on Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. he event will be held at the Regents football field behind College Hill Presbyterian Church. Admission is $5 per person. This will be a fun family event with a lot of activities for everyone, such as a gospel band, storytelling with Miss Jill from Square Books, a children's jumpy, concessions, a family picture booth, and lots of games, including Go Fish, Football Toss, Soak the Apple, Coca Cola Hoops, a Money Machine, Face Painting, Milk the Cow, Plinco, a CupCake Walk and Spin Art. Oxford Spiritual Study Group

SPAFER in Oxford, a part of the South Points Association for Exploring Religion, and is a nonprofit, non-denominational study group that meets monthly to explore the histroy and beliefs of the many faith traditions. We do this within the context of our knowledge of the natural and spiritual laws of the Universe in which we live. The next meeting will be Saturday, Oct. 29, 10 a.m. to noon, and will feature a video presentation by Dr. Deepok Chopra entitled, “The Mystery of Consciousness.” Chopra is a medical doctor, and national known author and lecturer in the fields of medicine, science, religion and spirituality. His presentation will focus on the role of consciousness in our human life experiences and in our relationship and understanding of the divine. Those of all faiths or no faith are welcome to attend what should be a very enlightening session. SPAFER in Oxford meets at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 31 CR 198, about four miles north of West Jackson Ave. off Old Sardis Road (Hwy. 314.) Coffee and donuts are served beginning at 9:30. OHS ‘Scream Scenes,’ Chili Supper

The Oxford High School Theatre department invites the community to attend its “Scream Scenes” play being staged at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29, 30 and 31 at the Kayla Mize Auditorium in the Oxford High School. A chili supper will be served at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 for $8 per plate. All proceeds will benefit the drama students efforts to raise the money to attend the Fringe Festival in Scotland in 2012.
