‘Triple Threat’ women set for Oxford Film Festival
OXFORD TOWN – Wearing several hats is what you do in the indie film industry, but for three filmmakers, taking on the script, the direction and the acting for their films makes them a triple threat. Meet Christine Elise McCarthy of “Bathing and The Single Girl,” Tanya Wright (pictured here) of “Butterfly Rising” and Christina Beck of “Perfection.” The three will be at the Oxford Film Festival to talk more about their films but, for now, Oxford Film Freak Melanie Addington previews their work on Page 16 in this week’s issue of Oxford Town. Community film director Matthew Graves interviewed
OXFORD TOWN – Last year, the Oxford Film Festival premiered Oxford’s first community film and it was a huge success — arguably, the most popular film of the entire festival. Chilly Chili Cook-off set for Feb. 18
OXFORD TOWN – A Chilly Chili Cook-off is set for Feb. 18 at the Oxford Conference Center (102 Ed Perry Blvd.) The event will also include a Boy Scout district camporee and live music. The competition features two divisions, each with cash prizes for winners, and is open to individuals and teams. Registration is open through Feb. 16. Oxonian Julie Cantrell publishes first novel
OXFORD TOWN – Oxford author Julie Cantrell (shown here with her dog, Ellie) just completed her first novel titled “Into the Free.” The inspiring new book is set for a release date of Feb. 1 and Off Square Books is celebrating by hosting a launch party on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 5 p.m. The party will feature a conversation with Cantrell, champagne and, well, chocolate. The photographs of Cantrell scattered throughout this issue (including the cover) were taken by Oxord Town music writer/phoptographer Kate Anthony who had instructions to take shots of Cantrell “that screamed Oxford.” Don’t miss the genesis of a great writing career next Tuesday at Off Square Books. Chinese Ceramics displayed at UM Museum
OXFORD TOWN – The University of Mississippi Museum examines ancient Chinese ceramics and the culture of their time with its latest exhibition, “On the Silk Road and the High Seas: Chinese Ceramics, Culture and Commerce,” which will be on display from now through Aug. 4. Coinciding with the exhibition, the museum will host a lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, featuring Virginia L. Bower (pictured here).
