Oxford’s ultimate festival weekend kicks off tonight

IN THIS WEEK’S ISSUE: Finally, after months of hoopla and planning, two of Oxford’s premiere festivals — Oxford Film Festival and Oxford Music Festival — collide and fuse for the first time, kicking off tonight (Feb. 9) at the Lyric Theater. First up, both festivals will be featured at a special fundraising edition of Thacker Mountain Radio beginning at 6. Then, the Film Festival begins its weekend-long activities by premiering the 2012 community film “The Show Must Go On” directed by Oxonian Matthew Graves. Then, at 8:30, OMF music cranks up (also at the Lyric) and continues until the last note is played at the Malco Studio Cinema VIP Tent on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 11). Coverage pretty much stretches from cover to cover in this special festival issue of Oxford Town — so, grab the beverage of your choice, some paper and pen, kick back and start reading. Young Buffalo kicks off Oxford Music Festival on Thacker Mountain Radio

OXFORD TOWN – Young Buffalo, the former-moniker of the solo work of Jim Barrett (pictured here), was born in the summer of 2009. Now, with over two years of gigs and songwriting experience under its belt, Young Buffalo is a highly sought after act in Oxford and across the South. ‘Triple Threat’ women set for Oxford Film Festival

OXFORD TOWN – Wearing several hats is what you do in the indie film industry, but for three filmmakers, taking on the script, the direction and the acting for their films makes them a triple threat. Meet Christine Elise McCarthy of “Bathing and The Single Girl,” Tanya Wright (pictured here) of “Butterfly Rising” and Christina Beck of “Perfection.” The three will be at the Oxford Film Festival to talk more about their films but, for now, Oxford Film Freak Melanie Addington previews their work on Page 16 in this week’s issue of Oxford Town. OXFORD TOWN – Last year, the Oxford Film Festival premiered Oxford’s first community film and it was a huge success — arguably, the most popular film of the entire festival. This year, Director Matt Graves continues the tradition by bringing the new community film, “The Show Must Go On,” to the forefront this weekend. Movie set to film in Oxford

The Oxford Convention and Visitor’s Bureau gave a $5,000 film grant Wednesday night at the request of screen writer Glenn German for an upcoming film, “Admissions,” that will be partly filmed at the University of Mississippi and Oxford, with actor Andy Garcia expected in the lead male role. The show features four women actors that become animated after they enter into their super hero storylines fighting disasters with help from Clorox products.
