Spring Break in Haiti — Back at the voodoo shed…

LIES AND OTHER TRUTHS — Going to Haiti on spring break sporting a Speedo may not be the best of ideas these days – but it happens. Oxford Town columnist Jim Dees tackles the problem head-on this week as a friend of his, Burke Murkee, is determined to visit the ravaged country …  with Speedo in tow.     Bryant’s ‘Galilee’ ‘haunts’

    OXFORD TOWN – Andrew Bryant is set for a show at Two Sick tonight (Thursday, March 11) when he’ll share a triple-bill night of rock with Gunslingers and Cory Taylor Cox & The Time Machine. Bryant, who is currently touring in support of his album “Galilee,” has been appearing at events and venues around Oxford lately and shows no signs of slowing in the near future. Bryant and “Galilee” are being compared to legends such as Springsteen and Neil Young and their work. (March 11, 2010, Page 7)

        Thacker Mountain Radio welcomes home Caroline Herring

        OXFORD TOWN – Thacker Mountain Radio returns to Off Square Books this week and welcomes back one of the show’s co-founders, singer-songwriter Caroline Herring. Catch Herring’s homecoming performance at the broadcast of Thacker Mountain Radio at Off Square Books on Thursday, March 11, at 6. Rounding out an incredible lineup this week are visiting authors Jimmy McDonough and Roy Morris Jr. as well as Taylor resident and Oxford Songwriter’s Association coordinator Jimmy Phillips, Thacker house band The Yalobushwhackers and host Jim Dees. (March 9, 2010)

          Shannon’s back

          OXFORD TOWN – Shannon McNally has surrounded herself with band members that she considers “family” – and one of them actually is; her husband, drummer Wallace Lester. The band’s latest album “Coldwater” was recently released and they have hit the road in a big way to support it. One stop of that tour is next week at Proud Larry’s on March 11. McNally talks with Oxford Town’s Kate Anthony about her influences, defining a genre and the late Jim Dickinson, producer of “Coldwater.” (March 4, 2010, Page 11)

            Hannah deserves legacy for grace as a teacher

            THE GODFREY SHOW — Steven Godfrey took a creative writing class at Ole Miss under the late Barry Hannah approximately 10 years ago. What he remembers is not so much the brilliant and massive body of work Hannah cranked out, but rather Hannah’s grace as a teacher. Hannah gave everyone’s idea of literature, especially the young and disadvantaged, a “warm embrace.” (March 4, 2010, Page 6)

              Stranger comes to town; Captain to the Maximus

              LIES AND OTHER TRUTHS – Jim Dees developed a close, personal relationship with Barry Hannah at the Hoka, Oxford’s tin-roof cinema, in early 1982. That relationship endured over the years up until Hannah’s untimely passing on Monday.                 Visiting the Tupelo Automobile Museum

                OXFORD TOWNIf you’re looking for a fun day trip out of Oxford, look no further than the Tupelo Automobile Museum. Located in the heart of downtown Tupelo, the museum boasts three centuries of automotive rarities from an 1886 Benz to present day Toyota. But that’s not all. The museum rotates other exhibits continually – exhibits such as one featuring Elvis Presley memorabilia and, currently, a Marty Stuart exhibit. (March 4, 2010, Page 15)

                    CadillacFunk mixes it up

                    OXFORD TOWN – Local band CadillacFunk has been lighting up stages all over town recently, offering a mixture of genres and personalities within the band. With a base of seven members, CadillacFunk has guest musicians sit in at any given time and/or venue giving audiences a different look and sound at each gig. The band is set for a show at Two Stick Sushi Bar on Friday. (March 4, 2010, Page 7)
