Watermelon Carnival

The annual Water Valley Watermelon Carnival will be held today and Saturday this week. Sponsored by Water Valley Chamber of Commerce, the carnival will feature live music, a street dance and fireworks on Friday, and live music, a variety of contests and free watermelon on Saturday. (August 4, 2010)

      Benefit Yard Sale

      The Delay Baptist Church Youth will have a yard sale from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the AmeriGas parking lot on North Lamar Boulevard. Proceeds will be used for the youth to attend the “Do Hard Things” conference in Nashville, Tenn. (August 4, 2010)

        Benefit Garage Sale

        A Sunday school class at North Oxford Baptist Church is hosting a garage sale from 6 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Family Life Center at the church on North Lamar Boulevard. The sale will feature top-notch merchandise, such as furniture, sports equipment, toys and clothes for all ages. Proceeds from the sale will help pay the expenses of a family adopting a baby from China. Donations are still being accepted. For more information, call Johnny Flynt at 234-9343. (August 4, 2010)

          Fall Vegetable Gardening

          The Lafayette County Master Gardeners Association presents “Fall Vegetable Gardening” at the Lafayette County & Oxford Public Library at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24. Dr. David Nagel, MSU Extension professor of plant and soil sciences (also known as “The Vegetable Specialist”), will be the guest speaker. The event is free and open to the public.             Animal adoption

            9 Lives Cat Rescue  will have an adoption day, hosted by Hollywood Feed on Jackson Avenue in the Goose Creek Mall, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Spayed, neutered and vaccinated kittens and adult cats will be available for adoption. Volunteers will be available to answer questions. (August 4, 2010)

              Fall Gardening Workshop

              The time to prepare for the fall vegetable growing season is approaching. Back by popular demand, Michelle McAnally of Taylor Creek Farm will present useful information on what and how to grow during the fall. Join the members of the Oxford Community Garden Association as they host this free workshop at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at the Stone Center, 423 Washington Ave., across from the Oxford City Pool. (August 4, 2010)

                    Everything is coming together for OHS

                    Over a week into summer camp, Oxford head coach Johnny Hill would like to have had a few practices in pads, but the torrential Mississippi heat has been a tough customer to work with.

                    Originally scheduled to move out of shirt and shorts on Monday, the heat index in Oxford reached over 118 degrees. Tuesday brought more of the same with predicted temperatures today again in the triple digits. (August 4, 2010, Page 8)
