Hotel builder seeks incentives

The city is considering a request from local hotelier Chan Patel for some tax breaks and incentives to build an 80-bed hotel next to the Oxford Conference Center. The request is for three items: a tax abatement, sidewalks and landscaping funded by the city, and waiver of one-time city fees, such as electrical connections. (February 4, 2010, Page 1)

    As the proud owner of the first residential solar installation in Oxford, Lowry Lomax’s main objective is to help the environment.       No wine for Valentines?

      Despite support from city officials, the State Tax Commission rejected Oxford’s request for a one-time exception for on-premise Sunday alcohol sales for Valentine’s Day. Given that Oxford has been allowed Sunday alcohol sales periodically over the years, the denial came as a shock to local officials and business operators. (February 3, 2010, Page 1)

          Lafayette schools brace for cuts

          Lafayette County School Superintendent Mike Foster warned members of the school district that some difficult budget decisions will be made in the coming weeks. With Gov. Haley Barbour calling for more cuts to school budgets, the district is having to address rumors about budget issues, Foster said at Monday’s school board meeting. Many employees have shared their concerns about job cuts with school board members. (February 2, 2010, Page 1)

            Grant helps YAC promote local artists

            The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council has received a $3,000 grant from the Elizabeth Firestone Foundation to promote local artists. The Arts Council aims to create a book that documents artists’ work, studio spaces and galleries. (February 1, 2010, Page 2)

                Schools, city agree on school resource officer plan

                  County gets grant to clean up illegal dumps

                  The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has awarded Lafayette County a solid waste assistance grant of $18,108 that will be used by the county for funding assistance for a local solid waste enforcement officer and for cleanup of unauthorized dumps. (January 20, 2010, Page 2)

                    UM to buy Campus Walk

                    Campus Walk apartments may become student housing this fall for the University of Mississippi campus, as a two-stage purchase proposal is pending before the College Board. The state College Board is expected to approve the deal at its meeting this week in Jackson. The University of Mississippi Foundation will buy and lease the property to UM until March 2012. (January 20, 2010, Page 1)
