  • Roger Bynum — 64, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at his home in Oxford. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Oxford. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the church. Waller Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements.
  • James P. “Skip” Lewis — 65, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Liberty Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 this evening at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley.
  • Joe E. Martin — 86, died Friday at Oxford Health and Rehab. Arrangements are incomplete with Hodges Funeral Home in Oxford.
  • Eugene McGee — 65, died Friday at his residence in Oxford. Arrangements are incomplete with Serenity-Martin Funeral Home of Oxford.
  • G.W. Miller — 86, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, at NHC in Columbia. A memorial service was held on Oct. 15 at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tenn.

    • Jon Robert “Jack” Boyden — 79, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

    • Marvel Bland McDonough — 90, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at Peachtree Village in Brandon. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
    • Brenda Lee Fitzgerald Moorman — 63, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at Oxford Health and Rehab in Oxford. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

        • Joyce Diane Gordon — 58, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014, at her home in Oxford. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Gillion M.B. Church in Sardis. Burial will follow in Orrwood Cemetery in Taylor. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Cooley’s Mortuary in Batesville, with the family receiving guests from 5 to 7 p.m.
        • Brenda L. Moorman — 63, died this morning at Oxford Health and Rehab Center in Oxford. Arrangements are incomplete with Waller Funeral Home in Oxford.
        • James “Melvin” Smith — 54, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Springfield Life Center in Abbeville. Burial will follow in Springfield M B. Church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Hodges Funeral Home in Oxford.
        • Malassie Wright — 98, died Wednesday at her daughter’s residence in Memphis. Arrangements are incomplete with Hodges Funeral Home in Oxford.

          This week in Oxford history

          Rushing the Christmas holiday is nothing new. Back in 1940, The Oxford EAGLE published an editorial welcoming the trend of extending the Christmas shopping season into November. This is also the week back in 1958 when the city announced it would start adding floats to the community’s annual Christmas parade. (November 19, 2014, Page 1A)

            • Jan Robertson — 73, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014, in Memphis. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, with a private graveside service to be held at Oxford Memorial Cemetery for family. Visitation will be held Thursday from noon until the service at the church. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Diana Coleman of Plantation; his children, John Brittain Coleman of Germantown, Tenn., Jennifer Coleman Griffith of Gastonia, N.C., Peter Scott Coleman of Oxford and Michael Craig Coleman of Plantation; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
              • Annetta Hardin — 73, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2014, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Clear Creek MB Church. Burial will follow in West Springhill Cemetery. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

                  This week in Oxford history

                  Oxford was honored to host a reception for Eudora Welty at Ole Miss this week back in 1977, and it was also the sad week in 1935 in which William Faulkner’s youngest brother, Dean, was killed in a plane crash near Thaxton. (November 12, 2014, Page 1A)
