Soil & Water Conservation District

All members of the community are invited to attend the Lafayette County Soil & Water Conservation District meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 at Lafayette High School Commons. Registration is $10 per person and includes the meal, program and membership. John Ruskey, Quapaw Canoe Company, will present the program, “The Great Flood of 2011 – Memphis to Vicksburg,” along photos, videos and music as he canoed down the Mississippi River during the great flood last spring.     Suicide Grief Support Group

    The Healing Hearts Suicide Grief Support Group will meet from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church. This is a peer-led group offering support for adults grieving a suicide death.       Tallahatchie Toastmasters

      The Tallahatchie Toastmasters will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Oaks, 601 Murray Drive. Anyone interested in improving their public speaking skills or learning leadership skills are welcome to come to the meeting. The meeting is expected to last one hour. (October 19, 2011)

        PFLAG

        The members of PFLAG will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Sarah Isom Center on the campus of the University of Mississippi. PFLAG of Oxford North Mississippi is an organization that works to support, educate and advocate for gays and lesbians, bisexuals and transgender and their families. October is a membership month so those who would like to be a formal member of PFLAG Oxford N. Mississippi are urged to pay the dues of $15 per individual or household per year (more if you can, less if you can’t).           University Greys

          The members of the University Greys, Camp No. 1803, Sons of Confederate Veterans, will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Ole Miss Catering, 123 Heritage Drive, located behind Applebee’s. Matthew Johnson, a history professor, will present a program comparing the burning of Oxford and Chambersburg, Pa., during the Civil War. All those interested are invited.             Council on Aging

            The Council on Aging will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday at Azalea Gardens Senior Care Community for coffee and information exchange. This is an informal group that meets the third Thursday of each month to provide a network of communication exchange for those who work with and on behalf of our older citizens. All service agency providers and interested volunteers throughout the area are encouraged to attend these monthly networking meetings.               • Ida Fay “Dean” Campbell — 88, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, at her residence in Oxford. Services will be held at noon Saturday at the Tallahatchie-Oxford Missionary Baptist Association Building in Oxford. Burial will follow in the Salem Cemetery in Oxford. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the Tallahatchie-Oxford Missionary Baptist Association Building. Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements.
              • Lawrence Doyle — an infant, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services were held this morning in the Coleman Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Babyland in the Garden of Memories at the funeral home.
              • Thelma Few Learned — 91, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at the DeSoto Healthcare Nursing Home in Southaven. Services were held this morning in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Burial followed in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley.
              • Lewis Rowsey — 82, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at his daughter’s residence in Tupelo. Services will be held at Noon Thursday at Pleasant Green MB Church in Water Valley. Burial will follow in Pleasant Green Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 this evening at the church. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
              • Samantha Stokes — 35, died Tuesday at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Arrangements are incomplete with Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc.

                    Gulf Oil Spill Public Forum

                    A team of experts is scheduled to discuss the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in a public forum Thursday at the University of Mississippi. The 90-minute, free event begins at 6 p.m. in Guyton Annex Room 210. Limited seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
                    Panelists include Kristine Willett, associate professor of pharmacology and graduate program coordinator for the Environmental Toxicology Research Program in the UM School of Pharmacy; Phillip Lee, senior research scientist at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory; Moby Solangi, president and executive director of the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies; and Joe Jewell, assistant director of Fisheries in the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources. The panel presentation is slated for 70 minutes, followed by a 20-minute question-and-answer session. Refreshments will be served afterward.
