    Gaining Ground

    Gaining Ground is having a meeting and sponsoring a lecture at 6 p.m. Monday at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center. Everyone is invited to the meeting that will begin with a potluck dinner, followed by a lecture by Jason Hoeksema entitled “Foraging and Identifying Wild Mushrooms in North Mississippi.” The lecture is free to the public, and those attending are encourage to bring a potluck dish to share. (October 14, 2011)

      Kountry Krafters

      The Kountry Krafters Volunteers Club will meet at noon Monday at the Lafayette County Extension Building, 101 Veterans Drive. Members will discuss the Holiday House and are reminded to bring a covered dish. Belk tickets guild money and yearly dues will also be collected. Guests are welcome.         NAMI CONNECTION

        NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Connection, a weekly recovery support group for people living with mental illness, will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Magnolia Room of Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.               • Kevser Ermin — 27, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, in Oxford. A remembrance service for Kevser will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Paris-Yates Chapel at the University of Mississippi. A reception for all friends and family will follow in the chapel’s courtyard after the service. Waller Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of local services.
              • Lula Mae Gardner Howard Goode —97, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home of Oxford. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
              • James Douglas “Doug” Green Jr. — 58, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Waller Funeral Home Chapel in Oxfor. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
              • Nora Wilson — 90, died Tuesday at Azalea Gardens in Oxford. Arrangements are incomplete with Waller Funeral Home of Oxford.

                • Virginia “Virgie” Russell Fulcher Taylor — 92, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services were held this morning at Como United Methodist Church in Como. Following the service, a visitation will be held at the Strickling-King Funeral Home in Yazoo City, beginning at 3 this afternoon, with a graveside service to follow at 4 in Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City. Wells Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Batesville was in charge of arrangements.

                  New plant expands quickly

                  Winchester Ammunition has wasted no time in expanding its operations in Oxford with the new Centerfire plant. Gov. Haley Barbour will be in town Wednesday for a private ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the new facility. It’s been less than a year since the company announced its plans to make a $100 milion investment in Oxford and create some 1,000 new jobs. (October 10, 2011, Page 1A)

                    • Ricky Wayne Henning — 42, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, in Panola County. Services will be held at 3 this afternoon at Wells Funeral Home Chapel in Batesville. Burial will follow in Blackjack Cemetery.
                    • Edgar Sandefer — 86, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Waller Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford, with the Rev. Kerby Ladner officiating. Burial will follow in Paris Cemetery in Paris. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
                    • James A. Woods Jr. — 79, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East in Memphis. Services were held Tuesday at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, with Elder Jeremy Gray officiating. Burial followed in the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Memphis. J.O. Patterson Mortuary in Memphis was in charge of arrangements.
