  • Beulah Mae Brown — 96, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, at her home in Oxford. Services were held Sunday in the Coleman Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford. Burial followed in the Oxford Memorial Cemetery.
  • Donna Maria Ptak Bynum — 62, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at her home in Oxford. Services were held Sunday at First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
  • Duffie Martin — died Saturday at the Yalobusha Nursing Home in Water Valley. Arrangements are incomplete with Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home of Oxford.
  • Frances Ross “Cotton” Sanders — 88, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at Yalobusha County Nursing Home in Water Valley. Services will be held at 3 this afternoon at the First Baptist Church in Maben. Burial will follow at Maben Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 6 this evening at the Serenity-Martin Funeral Chapel in Oxford and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

    • Inez Sturdivant — 98, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at Graceland Care Center in Oxford. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held for 90 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.

      More barriers at polls lead to fewer voters

      The more people that vote, the better our democratic form of government works, right? Why then, News Editor Jonathan Scott asks, would we want to approve Initiative 27 which would make it more difficult for a number of voters across the state of Mississippi?
