  • Trudy Akins — 75, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at her home in Water Valley. Services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
  • Thompson Rhea Dabney — 60, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson. Graveside services f will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ridgecrest Cemetery. Arrington Funeral Directors of Jackson is in charge of arrangements.
  • Jane Carr Hale — 83, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at her home in Maywood. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford was in charge of local arrangements.
  • Barbara Beatrice Turner Harris — 96, of Memphis died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at Kirby Pines Manor in Memphis. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens. Burial will follow in Memphis Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 this evening at the funeral home.

      • Zettie Holman-McGaughy — 70, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at Graceland Care Center. Services were held Saturday at Brown Chapel AME Church in Joliet, Ill. Burial was in Elmhurst Cemetery in Joliet. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc handled local arrangements. Minor-Morris Funeral Home handled Joliet arrangements.

Burial with military honors will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley. Seven Oaks Funeral Home of Water Valley is in charge of local arrangements. A memorial service will also be held today in Ft. Worth.
        • James Edward Briggs — 59, died Thursday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Arrangements are incomplete with Serenity-Martin Funeral Home.
        • Dorothy Louise Fondren — 78, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the T.O.M.B. building in Oxford. Burial will follow in Yocona Cemetery in Taylor. Visitation will be held until 6 this evening at Cooley’s Mortuary in Batesville and for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the T.O.M.B. building.
        • Elton Graham Sr. — 53, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at West Oak Grove Church of God and Christ in Hernando. Burial will follow at the State Veterans Cemetery at Forest Hill-Irene in Memphis. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Serenity-Martin Funeral Home in Oxford.

            Art show interference sets troubling precedent

            Oxford EAGLE News Editor Jonathan Scott expresses concern that Mayor Pat Patterson’s recent involvement in one particular artist’s show and its appropriateness to be displayed at The Powerhouse could be setting a precedent that seriously affects the growing local art community. Scott takes a closer look at the actions surrounding the “Scratch and Sniff” show, and suggests that the Arts Council ought to have more say than the mayor in what is displayed. (September 29, 2011, Page 4)

              • Patrick Hastings and Drew Mullins Meisenheimer — infant twin sons of Drew and Kate Meisenheimer of Bay St. Louis, were born and died on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. A private burial will be held Friday at Lakeshore Cemetery in Lakeshore. Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis is in charge of arrangements.
