  • Howard Mclain — 87, died today at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford. Arrangements are incomplete with Waller Funeral Home of Oxford.
  • Annie “Ann” Dale Jefcoat Rayburn — 84, died Friday, July 6, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Waller Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. The visitation will be held from 4 to 6 this evening at the funeral home.
  • Connie West — of Water Valley died Sunday in Lafayette County. Arrangements are incomplete with Seven Oaks Funeral Home of Water Valley.
  • Frances O. Woods — 93, died Friday, July 6, 2012, at Yalobusha General Hospital in Water Valley. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Burial will follow the service in the Masonic Haughton Cemetery in Amory at 3 p.m. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 this evening at the funeral home in Water Valley.

    Taking a fresh look at Faulkner

    The 39th annual Faulkner & Yoknapatawpha Conference begins Saturday. This year’s conference features more speakers and panels than ever before primarily because this year marks the 50th anniversary of Faulkner’s death.       • Inez Dixon Flowers — 91, died Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Services will be held at 2 this afternoon at the E. E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory. Burial will follow in the Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be held for an hour and 45 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.
      • Joseph David McKenzie — 87, died Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at his home in Oxford. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg on Saturday. Burial will follow at the Myers-McKenzie cemetery in Forrest County.

          Faulkner inspires art project, battles blight

          A Leadership Lafayette group is using original art pieces, inspired by writer William Faulkner, as part of an effort to make Faulkner Alley on the Square more attractive to visitors and to discourage vandals.             • Lawrence Mitchell — 91, died Sunday, July 1, 2012, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Hope MB Church. Burial will follow in Yocona Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
