        • Eugene “Gene” Lavert Gathright, 81, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015, at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford. Services will be held at 3 this afternoon at Christ Presbyterian Church in Oxford. Burial will follow in Toccopola Cemetery. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Waller Funeral Home in Oxford is in charge of arrangements.

          Rep. Nunnelee dies after brain cancer, stroke

          U.S. Rep. Alan Nunnelee of Mississippi, a fiscal and social conservative elected to Congress in a Republican wave of 2010, died Friday. He was 56. Elizabeth Parks, the spokeswoman in Nunnelee’s congressional office, said he died at his home in Tupelo. In June 2014, Nunnelee had a stroke while surgeons were removing a cancerous brain tumor. In addition to chemotherapy and radiation, he underwent physical therapy and speech therapy to try to recover from the stroke. In an email to supporters in August 2014, Nunnelee said he had drawn strength from a Bible verse about giving thanks to God in all circumstances. (February 6, 2015)
