Thursday’s obituaries

  • Aline Faccini Alias — 94, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014. Services were held this morning at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Clarksdale, and followed by a private burial in Oakridge Cemetery. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale is in charge of the arrangements. A reception will be held at the Clarksdale Country Club following the funeral. The family will arrive after the private burial.
  • Betty F. Bowen — 79, died this morning at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Holly Springs Funeral Home in Holly Springs. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service. The rest of the arrangements are incomplete with the funeral home.
  • Reba Fay Matsufuji — 86, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, at her home in Oxford. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
  • David Daniel Perkins — 75, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at the Tallahatchie County Nursing Home in Charleston. Services will be held at 2 this afternoon at Wells Funeral Home Chapel in Batesville, with burial to follow at Cold Springs Road Cemetery in Sardis.

    This week in Oxford history

    Back in 1995, Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi was about to begin a $22.6 million expansion, while in 1976, the town of Abbeville was born on Oct. 5. These are some of the highlights that took place in Lafayette County during this week in local history. (October 8, 2014, Page 1A)

        • Earl “Poppie” Jones — 84, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at his home in Oxford. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford, with the Rev. Freddie Buchanan officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Flat Cemetery in Oxford. Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 this evening.
        • Curtis Wayne King — 62, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, in Jonesboro, Ark. A memorial service will be held at a later date. He will be buried in the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery. High Point Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

          The Grove Groove

          After tens of thousands of Ole Miss fans spend a full day tailgating in the Grove on game day, crews with Ole Miss Landscape Services quickly move in to ensure the park-like setting is cleaned up by Sunday morning.             Parking meters bring in more than $50K

                  No. 11 Ole Miss defeats No. 3 Alabama in stunning upset

                  The undefeated Ole Miss Rebels shocked the previously undefeated Alabama Crimson Tide by a score  23 to 17 this afternoon before a national TV audience and a jam-packed Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Ole Miss is now 5-0 for the first time since 1962. Read all about the big win in our special commemorative edition of The Oxford EAGLE on Sunday. (October 4, 2014)

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Union West Baptist Church in Oxford. Burial will follow in Browning Cemetery. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Waller Funeral Home in Oxford is in charge of arrangements.
                    • Juanita Curry — 65, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014, at Baptist Hospital in Southaven. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Providence United Methodist Church in Abbeville. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 6 this evening at the Serenity-Autry Funeral Home in Holly Springs and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
                    • Martha Lucile (Grantham) Jackson — 83, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the First Presbyterian Church of Oxford. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service in the fellowship hall of the church. Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements.
