Holloway leaving Rebels to be closer to daughter
A decision to get closer to home has left the Ole Miss Rebels and coach Andy Kennedy without a significant starter and the team’s leading rebounder for the 2010-11 season.
Sophomore forward Murphy Holloway told Kennedy that he was planning to transfer from Ole Miss Friday so that he could be closer to his infant daughter, who is currently living with Holloway’s mother and his girlfriend in South Carolina. Holloway, who is a native of Irmo, S.C., said the decision to leave Oxford and his teammates was tough. (May 3, 2010, Page 1B)
Nettleton eliminates WVHS
Water Valley’s softball season came to an end Friday with a 10-0 loss in six innings to Nettleton in the Class 3A playoffs. The Lady Blue Devils finished the year 11-8 overall. (May 3, 2010, Page 2B)
Devils pounded Wildcats to reach second round
A good approach at the plate led to some early offense and an eventual win for the Water Valley Blue Devils in their Class 3A baseball playoff series with Independence Friday evening.
The Blue Devils advanced to the second round of the playoffs after defeating the Wildcats 10-4. WVHS scored the game’s first six runs and then tacked on its final four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. (May 3, 2010, Page 2B)
LHS, Kosciusko to resume softball series tonight
Driving in more base runners in scoring position will be the main objective of the Lafayette Lady Commodores today when their best-of-three Class 4A playoff series with Kosciusko resumes.
LHS lost 3-1 to the Lady Whippets on Friday at LHS before heavy rains prevented the decisive doubleheader on Saturday to be played. In the loss on Friday, the Lady Commodores stranded nine base runners overall, with eight in scoring position, a stat coach Cay Papagolos said had to improve. (May 3, 2010, Page 3B)
LHS tracksters place second at Region 1-4A meet
Two balanced performances on both the track and field led to second-place finishes for the Lafayette girls and boys track teams Friday in the Region 1-4A meet held at Pontotoc.
The Lady Commodores totaled 102 points, while the Commodores totaled 105.5 points. Pontotoc won both the girls and boys portions with 175 and 216 points respectively. Byhalia finished third in the girls meet with 75 points, while Center Hill was third in the boys meet with 82.5 points. A total of 12 teams competed in the annual meet. (May 3, 2010, Page 3B)
