Chargers show character in latest title win

If there was ever a match that showcased Oxford’s versatility and character as a team during their successive championship seasons it was Monday’s 5-2 win over West Jones.
The Chargers won their third straight state championship at the Ridgeland Tennis Center by using their depth and an immense amount of moxie to take down the Mustangs (14-5 overall). (May 11, 2010, Page 8)

    Chargers beat West Jones to capture Class 5A title

    Oxford’s dominance on the tennis court continued this morning as the Chargers won their third-straight state championship. The Chargers’ latest victim in a winning streak that has now reached 107 matches was West Jones, which defeated Brookhaven 5-2 in the South Half title match.

    Oxford, which won the last two titles in Class 4A, defeated the Mustangs 5-1 in a match that lasted just over an hour at the Ridgeland Tennis Center to claim the Class 5A title. (May 10, 2010, Page 1B)

      Stanley, Lafayette force Game 3 with close win on Saturday

      Lafayette didn’t need any extra motivation to defeat Amory at home in the second game of the MHSAA’s Class 4A playoff series between the two Saturday night. Facing a must-win situation after losing 5-3 to the Panthers on the road Friday, the Commodores responded with a 4-3 victory to even the series and set up tonight’s elimination game at Amory at 7. (May 10, 2010, Page 1B)

            Clean sweep: WVHS headed to North Half

            Two of the most complete games of the season have propelled the Water Valley Blue Devils back into the North Half title series.

            The Blue Devils polished off the Corinth Warriors in two games in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to set up a matchup with another set of Blue Devils — Booneville — for the right to advance on to Trustmark Park for the 3A title series next week. WVHS (20-6 overall) defeated the Warriors 5-3 on Friday and 11-6 on Saturday to capture their fifth straight win and seventh in the last eight games. (May 10, 2010, Page 3B)

              Commodores ready for elimination game

              SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — Lafayette’s Commodores made sure they got another bus trip to Amory by defeating the Panthers 4-3 Saturday night at W.V. Brewer Field. The win by LHS evened the best-of-three Class 4A second-round playoff series at 1-1 and set up the deciding Game 3 on Monday at Amory at 7 p.m. (more…) (May 9, 2010)

                    Oxford track teams ready for 5A North Half

                    Oxford’s girls and boys track teams are both looking to capture their first Class 5A North Half title Saturday at Bobby Holcomb Field. The Chargers and Lady Chargers have dominated their competition in both the district and region meets leading up to North Half and coach Scott Kendricks said his teams are prepared for the meet, which is the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the next week’s 5A state meet. (May 7, 2010, Page 7A)
