Wins move ‘Dores closer to spot in 4A playoffs

The Lafayette High School baseball team moved one step closer to locking up a playoff spot with a pair of wins against Rosa Fort on Tuesday evening. Whole lotta Alabama Shakes going on

OXFORD TOWN – There was so much to say about the Alabama Shakes that there was no way that we were going to fit it all in Oxford Town this week (No. 972) — from the instant downloads of live tracks available when you pre-order the “Boys & Girls” CD to the bonus 7” album that includes the tracks “Heavy Chevy” and “Pocket Change/Mama” when you pre-order your vinyl copy to the band’s television debut on “Conan.”

Murphree, Stanley ‘lift up’ LHS in win

It took 13 games for the Lafayette High School baseball team to record its first home run of the 2012 season, proving the old adage of good things come to those who wait.

John Murphree broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning when he belted an offering from New Albany pitcher Ben Foster over the left field fence for a two-run home run to put the ‘Dores ahead 4-2 in what would turn out to be a 7-2 win over the Division 2-4A rival Bulldogs at W.V. Brewer Field on Friday night. (more…) (March 26, 2012, Page 7)

‘You’ll understand when you get older’

Assistant News Editor Jeff Eubanks admits it – he can’t, or doesn’t want to, do some of the things he once did. It’s a sign of “getting older,” he writes, as he recalls some wise words from his father from not that long ago. (March 22, 2012, Page 4)

            Chargers stay tough, take Classic

Oxford baseball coach Chris Baughman held a meeting with his team Wednesday about facing adversity and staying mentally tough.

It didn’t take long for the meeting to be put to the test, as the Chargers had to respond to an early deficit in order to defeat Lafayette 6-5 Friday night at Edwin Moak Field in the Crosstown Classic. (more…) (March 12, 2012, Page 3B)

Rebels crack under pressure from Vanderbilt

With all the ice thrown on the floor during Vanderbilt’s 102-76 win over Ole Miss at C.M. “Tad” Smith Coliseum Thursday night — the game had to be stopped twice due to cups being thrown from the student section — some should have been tossed on a couple of Rebels to help them chill out. (February 17, 2012, Page 6A)

Lady ‘Dores defeated by Lady Vikings in semifinals

NEW ALBANY — A chance for the Lafayette Lady Commodores basketball team to claim a second consecutive district tournament championship was sunk Thursday night by the North Pontotoc Lady Vikings.

A strong effort late in the game was not enough to overcome a sluggish start for the Lady ‘Dores at the New Albany Middle School Gym, as Lafayette fell 62-48 to the Lady Vikings in the semifinals of the Division 2-4A Tournament. (more…) (February 10, 2012, Page 7A)
