Don Whitten

Local politics starting to get interesting

Did you realize it’s only 187 days until the first primary elections are held? And just over 10 months before the general election? Editor Don Whitten writes that a date to pay a bit more attention to right now is March 1, the filing deadline for those running for local offices this year, and he notes that lots of hats have already been thrown into the ring. (January 26, 2011, Page 4)

‘Lafayette County Heritage’ in 4th printing

Looking for some general or detailed historical information about Oxford, one of the many communities in Lafayette County or the University of Mississippi? Look no further than “Lafayette County Heritage,” a 1986 book that’s in its fourth printing. Editor Don Whitten takes a look at the popular resource book that’s available from the Lafayette County Historical and Genealogical Society. (January 24, 2011, Page 4)

We can all help with this school project

A letter to the editor from a 14-year-old student in Muskegon, Mich., is asking for help from Oxford EAGLE readers on a school project about life in Mississippi. Editor Don Whitten gets the ball rolling for Logan Moore by writing him a letter in his column telling a bit about our community, our schools, our weather, et cetera. (January 19, 2011, Page 4)

Dealing with vending machines can be frustrating

Ever get thirsty at the auto repair shop? Looking for a drink while your in the waiting room at the doctor’s office? Maybe you’re a bit hungry at your motel room and it’s past dining hours. Where do you turn? Vending machines, of course. Editor Don Whitten is just like everyone else in that regard, and he tells some of the frustrations anyone who deals with vending machines a lot can have. (January 17, 2011, Page 4)

Where did all the canned drinks go?

Editor Don Whitten is in charge of getting the soft drinks for his family and a recent purchase of what he thought were 24-packs turned out to be just 20-packs. Whitten noticed other items shrinking in size or quantity without any price changes and says it’s a sign of the times. (January 13, 2011, Page 4)

Two snows rare; third one still to come

It’s rare to see two significant snows in a winter in north Mississippi, but three? Well, count on it, says Editor Don Whitten as he reminds readers of the old saying that if snow stays on the ground three days there’s another snow coming. (January 12, 2011, Page 4A)

Dealing with a rare, real snow storm

Sometimes the weather guys and gals get it right and sometimes they don’t. From the looks of the past 24 hours or so, they were right this time, huh? Editor Don Whitten takes a closer look at how last week’s forecast of a heavy snowfall turned out to be very accurate, and says it remains to be seen how long we’ll be dealing with the winter storm. (January 10, 2011, Page 4)

                Questions – and unclear answers

Larry Csonka, Sylvester Stallone, Liza Minnelli, Cher, Steve Spielberg, Jimmy Buffett, Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Donald Trump and, perhaps, many of you. What’s the common factor? Age, as all of those, plus some of you, were born in 1946 and will be eligible for Medicare sometime this year. Editor Don Whitten wonders about the future of Medicare and Social Security as Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1965 get ready to take their share from the programs. (January 6, 2011, Page 4)

Losing invaluable muses during the past year

The community newspaper business is one where we try to serve our readers by giving them a snapshot of their lives and the lives of those around them. To accomplish this, we count on members of the community to help us with stories, story ideas, pictures, et cetera. Editor Don Whitten notes that some of his most valuable contacts – his “muses” – passed away in 2010 and will be missed. (January 3, 2011, Page 4)

Let’s be reasonable with those resolutions

Have you decided on any New Year’s resolutions? With only a couple of days to go before 2011 hits, Editor Don Whitten makes a few suggestions including resolutions about eating, exercising, reading, voting – and writing letters to the editor. (December 29, 2010, Page 4)
