Don Whitten

Tank – a special guy who will be missed

Death rarely, if ever, has any rhyme or reason, Editor Don Whitten writes, and certainly makes the present and the future difficult to deal with. It’s the past that begins the healing, he writes, as he remembers Lafayette County’s Alan Arrington, who died earlier this week from injuries in an auto accident. (December 26, 2013, Page 4)

Rewriting ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’

One of the longest and yet best-known of Christmas carols is “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Editor Don Whitten recalls that tune that most of us knows well and updates it a bit with more modern gifts – starting with the partridge in a pear tree that becomes a cellphone with an unlimited plan. (December 20, 2013, Page 4A)

          Take proper precautions during holidays

Shopping, visiting or leaving town during the holidays? It’s certainly common in a university town. Editor Don Whitten repeats some warnings from local authorities about taking proper precautions and adds a few of his own. (December 16, 2013, Page 4)

Grisham, King, Conroy sequels read well

Sequels work in movies, usually, better than books. There are exceptions, however, and three book sequels out by popular authors are excellent examples. Editor Don Whitten takes a look at the latest works by John Grisham, Stephen King and Pat Conroy which are follow-ups to novels from, literally, decades ago. (December 13, 2013, Page 4A)

It’s time for letters to – and from – Santa

While school children around the area are working on letters to Santa Claus that are printed in the annual Season’s Greetings section of The Oxford EAGLE, Editor Don Whitten came across a letter recently from good ol’ Saint Nick himself asking about the correspondence from the LOU community. (December 9, 2013, Page 4A)

Local teams get shot at ultimate goal

High school football teams in Mississippi have several goals: making the playoffs, practicing Thanksgiving week when school is out, earning a trip to Jackson for the state finals and, ultimately, winning a state championship. The two local teams, Oxford’s Chargers  and Lafayette’s Commodores, both get a shot at the ultimate goal – in the same season and on the same day – this weekend. (December 4, 2013, Page 4)
