Spring break week always a special one

Notice more parking spaces around the Square? How about shorter lines in stores and restaurants? With the weather nice, that generally means one thing around Oxford – spring break. How many politicians did you hear from?

Mitt called. So did Nancy and Rick and even the guv. Editor Don Whitten writes about his weekend  talking – no, make that listening – to politicians via the magic of robo calls. (March 12, 2012, Page 4A)

Giving up an hour never an easy thing to do

Yes, it’s time once again to move the clocks ahead an hour as we begin daylight saving time. Editor Don Whitten takes a look at the practice, including how difficult it is to adjust those first few days of the change in the spring. (March 9, 2012, Page 4A)

Do you listen before starting to dial?

One long ring? Or two short rings? That’s what Editor Don Whitten once listened for on the party line at his house – and now it seems as if history is repeating itself through technology. (March 7, 2012, Page 4)

Is it time to dust off the turntable, albums?

To many in the younger generation, an “album” is a collection of songs, almost always on a compact disc. To others of us, as Editor Don Whitten writes, it’s a collection of songs on a vinyl record that comes along with artwork, lyrics and several other things in a neat album cover. Perhaps there’s a return coming to the days of vinyl and real album covers; one local store that just opened certainly hopes so. (March 5, 2012, Page 4A)

Let’s take a look at an Arkansas charter school

Only time will tell which, if any, legislation we get about charter schools in Mississippi. While lawmakers are debating the subject, Editor Don Whitten passes along some of the information he’s gathered about the KIPP Delta Schools, a charter school program in Helena/West Helena, Ark. (March 1, 2012, Page 4)

Going to any birthday parties today?

Leap years roll around every four years. And the odds of being born on Leap Year Day? How about 1 in 1461? Editor Don Whitten takes a look at the history behind Feb. 29 and recalls the first time he heard of someone with that rare birthday. (February 29, 2012, Page 4)

Home help the key to any school’s success

Charter schools tops conversation these days at most water coolers and coffee shops in Mississippi so Editor Don Whitten takes a closer look at the issue and says there’s more to helping Johnny learn to read than different kinds of schools. (February 24, 2012, Page 4A)

Last week was recognized as Severe Weather Awareness Week and Editor Don Whitten reminds readers of how varied the weather can be locally at this time of the year.
