Caregivers at NMRC charged with abuse crimes

Two former caregivers with the North Mississippi Regional Center have been charged with crimes against vulnerable adults, according to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
Charged were Maggie Warren, 40, of Bruce and Zeporia Jones, 24, of 116 County Road 449 in Lafayette County.

    Shelters, Pantry receive grant money

    Four local organizations that offer emergency food and shelter have been awarded grant money by the local Emergency Food and Shelter Program Board that is made up of local representatives from several nonprofit agencies. (June 18, 2010, Page 1A)

      Two arrested for failure to pay taxes

      Two Oxford business owners were arrested this week for failing to pay their sales tax.
      Since the charge is a misdemeanor, the names of the two are not being released.
      According to Kathy Waterbury of the Mississippi State Tax Commission, the commission uses criminal procedures only as a last resort. (June 17, 2010, Page 2)

            Woman finds her roots in Taylor

            Dolores Burri knew nothing about her father other than he was a U.S. GI soldier, tall and black and met her mother while in Austria in 1956. More than 50 years later, Burri tracked down her roots to Taylor. Read her story in today’s Eagle. (June 14, 2010, Page 1)

              Minigolf course opens near county line

              Who doesn’t like putt-putt?
              Now area residents finally have a miniature golf course at Rebel Park, on Highway 6 West.
              The 9-hole course is the third installment in a continuing evolution of Rebel Park that’s centered on entertainment for the entire community. The minigolf course is part of the same park that offers paint ball fun for the whole family. (June 14, 2010, Page 5)

                John Currence named Restaurateur of the Year

                Chef John Currence was awarded the 2010 Restaurateur of the Year by the Mississippi Hospitality and Restaurant Association during an awards ceremony Monday.
                The association accepted open nominations from operators throughout the state. The list of restaurateurs was reduced to a group of six finalists, including Currence. (June 11, 2010, Page 1A)

                  Stark Young’s days at the Walton Young Home

                  One of the most distinguished graduates of the University of Mississippi was also a resident of Oxford.
                  Although Stark Young was born in Como, he would later move with his family to Oxford. Young was born in 1881 and in 1890 his mother died. A few years later, his father, also a graduate of Ole Miss, would remarry and move to Oxford. (June 11, 2010, Page 3B)

                    New W.V. grocery recalls days gone by

                    Alexe van Beuren got tired of driving to Oxford from Water Valley whenever she ran out of her favorite milk from the Brown Family Dairy or some home-grown produce.
