Three indicted on meth charges

Among the dozens of indictments handed down by the grand jury at the end of June, three county residents indicted for allegedly manufacturing and/or possessing methamphetamine , and a local woman has been officially indicted in the murder. (July 13, 2010, Page 1A)

    Chancery clerks to attend Oxford conference

    Chancery clerks from 60 counties in Mississippi will meet in Oxford this weekend. The annual conference will be held at the Inn at Ole Miss. Oxford has not hosted the conference since 2000. (July 13, 2010, Page 2A)

      Supervisors OK response to Drug Court order

      Lafayette County Board of Supervisors approved a written response drafted by County Attorney David O’Donnell to a court order that instructed the board to cease and desist from interfering with business of the 3rd Circuit Drug Court. A copy of the letter has not been made available. (July 13, 2010, Page 2A)

        Three earn Eagle Scout ranking since January

        Earning the highest rank in Boy Scouts is no easy task. Nationally, statistics list that only 2 percent in earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Oxford’s Boy Scout Troup 45 is making mincemeat of that statistic by honoring three boys who earned their Eagle Scout ranking since January. Those scouts are Rustin Rasberry, David Rozier III and William Alexander. (July 12, 2010, Page 1)

          Veterans Memorial Park shapes up

          A park is taking shape thanks to the help of the city of Oxford. The Veterans Memorial Park is beginning to take shape as Bennett Construction crews have been placing curbing along the street. The addition of sidewalks next week will make it easier to walk  from the State Veterans Home, past the new park and down the hill to the Veterans Building. (July 9, 2010, Page 1A)

            Friends help build ‘Harmontown International Airport’

            With a love of flight and 50 acres of property, David Tomlin turned 1,900 feet of his property into a landing strip. It took five years and lots of help to turn dense forest into what has been jokingly dubbed, “Harmontown’s International Airport.” (July 9, 2010, Page 1B)

                County accepts Oxmoor’s roads

                The Amegy Bank of Texas became the new owners of the Oxmoor subdivision after the subdivision was foreclosed about two years ago. Most of the roads were left incomplete. On Tuesday, the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors approved taking over the maintenance for the roads inside the upscale subdivision. (July 8, 2010, Page 1A)

                  Cable company leaves Lafayette County out in the cold

                  Staff writer Alyssa Schnugg praises the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors for their recent emphatic “No” vote on giving the local cable company, MetroCast, a tax exemption. Cutting taxes, especially for schools, is a big no-no with customers and the supervisors made that clear with their vote. (July 8, 2010, Page 4A)

                    Two charged with arson

                    Two men, Marco Antonio Mason, 30, and Melvin Dean Turner, 27, were booked into the Lafayette County Detention Center for attempting to burn down a house in Taylor. The two men have been charged with arson, but no motive has been released. (July 7, 2010, Page 2)
