    Disaster victims can get food help

    The Mississippi Department of Human Services is offering a one-time food assistance program to the residents of the storm-damaged areas of Lafayette County. Residents have until 7 p.m. Friday to apply for the assistance.       Group protests death penalty

      While their views varied in small detail, those who gathered in front of the Lafayette County Courthouse Tuesday evening to protest the lethal injection killing of convicted killer Benny Joe Stevens, they all shared one common belief that killing another human is wrong, even when it’s called  ”justice.” (May 11, 2011, Page 1)

          Local officers honored for DUI arrests

          Three Oxford police officers were honored recently for keeping the roads safer by getting drunk drivers off of them.

          The awards were presented April 27 by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and the state Office of Highway Safety to DUI officers David Sabin, Hildon Sessums and Chris Ray. (May 10, 2011, Page 2)

            Judge considers motions to disqualify prosecutor

            After a full day of testimony and arguments Monday, U.S. District Judge Neal Biggers Jr. said he will take up to 48 hours to rule on whether U.S. Assistant Attorney Bob Norman should be disqualified from testifying at any future hearings involving Zach Scruggs. (May 10, 2011, Page 1)

              County to turn debris into mulch

              Lafayette County has brought in two large grinders to help turn the tons of fallen trees, limbs and brush into tons of mulch. Homeowners can leave the debris at the curb in the storm-riddled areas and crews will pick it up and bring it to the Lafayette County Industrial Park where the grinders are located. (May 10, 2011, Page 1)

                Disaster Recovery Center opens

                For Lafayette County residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed when a tornado tore through the southeastern part of the county April 27, a Disaster Recovery Center has opened at Anchor Baptist Church on Highway 7 South to offer information and help. (May 9, 2011, Page 6A)

                    Parents’ stress can affect kids

                    When the economy bottomed out in late 2008, therapists saw more adults suffering from depression and anxiety due to the stress of increasing bills, lost income and trying to support families.
