Get to know the new oxfordeagle.com
Welcome! We hope you’ll find The Oxford EAGLE’s new Web site to be timely in content, clean in design and intuitive to use. While it may look simple from the outside, this site represents a surprisingly sophisticated blend of concepts and technologies which we’ve fit together to meet the needs of our readers, both local and out-of-town. Here’s a brief tour of some of the features you’ll find here:
Structured in many ways like a blog, this site is built upon a system of posts which our writers create each day to summarize the stories they publish. The summary concept is key, in that we will no longer be publishing stories from The EAGLE in the story format most familiar to online news readers. Rather, the summaries we post seek to give you the basic news and information from each story.
Tags and categories
Every post we make is tagged and categorized in a way that efficiently sorts all the news and features we publish each day, allowing you to more quickly find exactly what you’re looking for on our site. Interested specifically in Lafayette sports or the local music scene? Choose that category from the main menu and you’ll be taken straight to the most recent relevant posts.
Additionally, as we continue tagging each post with the names, places and topics mentioned in the story, we’re building an intricate web which you can follow to find other posts that mention the same person or place.
In a small town like ours, the same terms come up a lot. What you see now is just the beginning, as we’ll be able to add images, background information, links, directions and more, as we blend the latest news and events with the context of more information.
The Oxford EAGLE’s e-edition allows subscribers to read and see the entire paper each day online, exactly as it appears in print. The e-edition is offered at $5 per month.
Integrating excellent images into our Web site has been a priority throughout our web-development process. By partnering with the online photo-housing system PhotoShelter, we’re able to showcase the images you see published in the newspaper as well as many more we don’t have room to run. The photos section of our site also gives you an easy way to purchase photos online and have them delivered right to your mailbox.
You can access photo galleries in one of two ways: Either by clicking on the Photos link in the main menu above, or by clicking on an image in a post. That will take you directly to the related gallery.
While our photo galleries and slideshows from Ole Miss athletics events are available for viewing, SEC and University of Mississippi media-credential requirements prevent us from being able to offer any photos of Ole Miss athletes for sale to the general public.
A single place where you can find everything that’s happening in and around Oxford — from music to meetings to sports to exhibits. It’s something this community has been wishing for for years, and it’s one of the most important aspects of the new oxfordeagle.com. While other groups and organizations have made noble efforts in the past to establish such a calendar, keeping such a thing up-to-date is no easy task. It makes sense for Oxford’s local newspaper to take on the challenge.
But we can’t do it alone; consider this calendar a community endeavor in the truest sense. We’ll need your help in making sure your events get posted. A simple online form we’ve created will streamline this process for all of us. Now that this new tool is in place, we’ll all be working together to keep it up-to-date as a resource for both ourselves and our out-of-town visitors.
You may have passed by our storefront on Jackson Avenue hundreds of times; now, take a look inside. Under the About Us section of this site, you’ll find a wealth of information about one of Oxford’s oldest institutions — its local newspaper — and its 140 years’ worth of history.
And if you’d like to know more about the people behind The Oxford EAGLE today, this is where you can see a face behind every byline on a page or voice at the other end of the line. From the front office to the press room, get to know our staff and hear in everyone’s own words what makes our work worthwhile.
