OMAHA, Neb. — Ole Miss, fresh off its walk-off victory over Texas Tech in the College World Series, returned to the practice field Wednesday morning in preparation for another elimination game against TCU on Thursday.
The Rebels got in a workout at the field on the campus on Creighton University, but before they did, head coach Mike Bianco and a few players spoke with the media. As expected, Ole Miss confirmed right-hander Sam Smith (5-4, 3.45 ERA) will get the start against the Horned Frogs, who took Virginia to 15 innings in Tuesday’s nightcap before falling 3-2.
Smith hasn’t pitched past the fifth inning in any of his last four starts, but the senior said he’s capable of going deeper before turning things over to the bullpen.
Smith also talks about throwing in an elimination game for the second straight week and pitching in the spacious TD Ameritrade Park that lends itself to low-scoring games among other things in the video below.
Bianco said the confidence is there in Smith, but the offense has to help out at some point. The cavernous park combined with running into some elite arms haven’t helped, Bianco said, but Ole Miss is one of six teams remaining in the tournament despite combining for just five hits through its first two games.
Watch Bianco hit on the offense’s struggles, sending Smith to the mound and his friendship with TCU coach Jim Schlossnagle among other topics in the following video.
