BLOG: Rebels await Arkansas or Texas A&M in SEC tourney

BLOG — The Ole Miss baseball team will have to wait and see which team it gets in its first game of the SEC Tournament.

The 11th-ranked Rebels (40-16, 19-11 Southeastern Conference) lost out on a chance to sweep Texas A&M Saturday afternoon with a 9-6 setback, but Ole Miss was still able claim the Western Division title outright when Alabama knocked off Mississippi State later in the day.

It didn’t mean anything for Ole Miss’ seeding in the SEC Tournament, which starts Tuesday at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. The Rebels’ 4-2 win over the Aggies on Friday locked them into the No. 2 seed, giving them an opening-day bye. Ole Miss will play the winner of the 7-10 game between Arkansas and A&M on Wednesday at approximately 1 p.m.

The Rebels will face LSU, Vanderbilt or Tennessee on Thursday.

A strong finish has put Ole Miss in a position to host a regional and get one of the eight national seeds for the NCAA Tournament, though a win or two in Hoover may be necessary to stay in contention. The Rebels, who began the week at No. 15 in the official RPI rankings, won their last four league series and are 19-8 since getting swept at Alabama March 28-30.
