HOUSTON — The Lafayette softball team’s back is against the wall after losing to the Houston Hilltoppers 8-2 in Game 1 of the MSHAA Class 4A North State finals.
The Commodores struck early with a two-run top of the first inning but were unable to muster anymore offense the rest of the game.
“We knew going in (Houston) can hit,” Lafayette coach Katie Moore said. “It was a little bit different attack toward our pitches than we had planned. We kind of just let other teams tell us what happened to them, and we didn’t trust our own selves.”
Right-hander Avery McCullough had a rough outing, giving up seven of the eight runs in the first two innings. The Hilltoppers plated four runs in the bottom of the first and followed that up with a three-run home run in the second. McCullough settled down after that, only allowing one more run the final five innings.
McCullough went 0-for-3 at the plate but had an RBI. First baseman Katrina Wilson was responsible for the other RBI, going 1-for-3.
Lafayette will host Game 2 and, if necessary, Game 3 Monday starting at 4 p.m.
