BLOG: Day One of Oxford Regional washed out

BLOG — Mother Nature decided the Oxford Regional would not start until Saturday as Friday’s games were canceled due to weather and field conditions.

The rain hit Oxford-University Stadium around 1:30 p.m. and was off-and-on most of the afternoon. With the threat of more impending inclement weather and the current field conditions, the NCAA allowed Friday’s games to be moved to Saturday.

The Georgia Tech-Washington game was scheduled for a 3 p.m. start with Ole Miss and Jacksonville State to follow at 7 p.m., but those games have been moved into Saturday’s time slots of 1 and 5 p.m., respectively.

NCAA protocol after a postponement calls for a 2-3-2 format starting Saturday to ensure the double-elimination tournament is over by Monday. Saturday’s losers will start a tripleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m. Saturday’s winners will play at 3 p.m. followed by an elimination game at 7 p.m. The championship game will start at 2 p.m. Monday with an if-necessary game slated for 7 p.m.

There is a 60 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms on Saturday as well. (May 30, 2014)
