Man found dead in county

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of a Gulfport man who was a University of Mississippi graduate student. At 3:09 a.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to 20B County Road 140 for a welfare check. They discovered the body of 25-year-old Zacharias Herculese McClendon of Gulfport. According to investigators, foul play is suspected.

Few details are being released at this time as the investigation is ongoing. According to other sources, McClendon died from a single gun-shot wound. A white car was reportedly towed from the Chevron on Highway 6 near Thacker Heights Drive on Wednesday morning with crime tape on it, but the sheriff’s department would not say if the two incidents were related. The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is working in conjunction with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations and the Oxford Police Department.
The sheriff’s department is asking if anyone has any information to  contact them at 234-8789 or Lafayette County Crime Stoppers at 234-8477. (December 18, 2013)
