Oxford rolls past Pearl into 5A North Half title game

BLOG — Oxford make quick work of the Pearl Pirates Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field. Another fast start on offense, in both the first and second half, coupled with some big stops on defense, resulted in the Chargers defeating the Pirates 39-21 in the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs.

In a game that wasn’t as close as the score, the Chargers (13-0 overall) will now host Callaway in the 5A North Half title game next week. It’s the first time Oxford has advanced this far in the playoffs since 2005 when the Chargers were defeated by West Point on the road. Oxford hasn’t hosted a North Half title game since 2003, the only time it advance to Jackson to play for a state championship. That’s when the Chargers were in 4A.

Oxford’s balance on offense was key in defeating the 11-3 Pirates. A wet field didn’t bother OHS quarterback Jack Abraham, who was 11-for-21 in the first half for 134 yards and a touchdown and 13-for-19 in the second half, with three of those completions going for touchdowns. Oxford allowed 21 points, but all of the touchdowns came due to a short field or against the reserve unit.

The Chargers jumped out to a 20-0 lead thanks to an 11-yard run by Ethan Holmes midway through the first quarter, a 2-yard run by Jarius Barnes on the ensuing possession just before the first quarter came to a close and 12-yard strike from Abraham to Joey Walden at the 9:55 mark of the second quarter.

Oxford led Pearl 20-7 at the half and after holding the Pirates on fourth down at its own 15-yard line on the first drive of the third quarter, the Chargers and Abraham orchestrated an 85-yard scoring drive that essentially ended the contest. Abraham completed five passes on the drive, including a key 30-yard pass to Glenn Gordon on third-and-nine at the OHS 16. Abraham capped the possession with a 19-yard toss to Walden at the 7:09 mark.

Abraham then increased the Chargers’ lead, with the help of extra point from Cody Mills, to 33-7 with 13-yard strike to D.K. Metcalf with 3:04 left in the third. His final touchdown toss of the night went to Kyree White, who out-fought a Pearl defender to secure an 18-yard toss from Abraham. Below is a video of Abraham following the win.

Congratulations to the Charges for this win and advancement. I believe this team has the talent and coaching to go all the way. I’m booking a room in Jackson now! I predict a win for Oxford over Calloway 34-20.
