BLOG — A fast start wasn’t enough to lift the Water Valley Blue Devils past the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A.
Louisville, considered one of the best teams in the state regardless of class, ended the Blue Devils’ season with a 56-27 win Friday night in the second round of the MHSAA playoffs. Water Valley (11-2 overall) scored a touchdown on its first offensive possession and then recovered a Louisville fumble on the ensuing kickoff to take a 13-7 lead. The Blue Devils momentum and lead didn’t last long as the Wildcats drove back down the field to take the lead for good on their next possession.
The Wildcats (13-0) amassed 416 yards in the first half en route to a 42-20 lead at the half and that lead only increased in the third quarter thanks to the play of quarterback Wyatt Roberts, running back Demarcus Brooks and wide receiver Dontae Jones. Brooks scored four touchdowns in the first half and rushed for 118 yards on just 11 carries while Roberts was 18-for-20 for 258 yards and two scores.
Louisville will now play at Cleveland East Side in the third round of the 3A playoffs. For more on Friday night’s game, see Monday’s Sports section in the EAGLE. (November 16, 2013)
