BLOG – Lafayette’s defense got after it Friday night. With the annual Crosstown Classic looming, the Commodores clamped down on mistakes on defense and held the DeSoto Central Jaguars in check Friday night.
The effort helped pave the way to a 21-6 win for the Commodores over the Jaguars, who were stopped inside the red zone two times in the second half with the LHS offense able to do much. LHS stopped DeSoto Central four straight possessions as the Jaguars tried to extend the drive on fourth down.
LHS never trailed in the contest as D.K. Buford capped its first scoring drive of the game with an 18-yard run with 6:35 left in the first quarter. The Commodores enjoyed a 14-0 lead at halftime thanks to an 18-yard touchdown toss from quarterback Devon Thomas to Landon Busby with just 57 seconds remaining before the break.
Following DeSoto Central’s lone touchdown of the game in the third quarter, Buford put the ‘Dores back up two scores when he scored on a 4-yard run the ensuing possesion. His run was set up by two first-down option keepers by Thomas as well as a 24-yard pass reception from Dillon Helm.
LHS linebacker/safety Trey Shaw talks about the defense in this video following the game.
