SPORTS BLOG: BRUCE — It fit the script once again.
Friday’s backyard rival with Bruce and Water Valley played out much the same as the previous two contests between the squads with the game undecided until the final minute.
The Blue Devils (4-0 overall) came out of Trojan Field with a 22-16 win, but not without a scare.
Jadarrius Benson nearly hauled in a deflected pass from Donta Armstrong on 4-and-2 play from the 12 yard-line with 10 seconds remaining, but bobbled the ball and lost the handle on it as he fell to the ground to seal the Blue Devils win.
Senior quarterback E.J. Bounds led the Blue Devils on their game-winning drive in the fourth quarter with 31 yards on four carries, one of those from 5 yards out to put WVHS ahead for good with 7:05 left in the contest.
The Trojans (3-1) took their final lead of the game a possession prior, when Tyler Donovan booted a 27-yard field goal to pull ahead 16-14 with 11:52 to play in the fourth quarter.
Both teams scored on their opening possession of the ball game. Armstrong made a dive to the end zone for the Trojans first score of the game on a six-yard run, and Bounds called his own number from two yards out to even things up at 7-7 at the 5:36 mark in the first quarter.
Elijah Rogers scored from 10 yards out with 10:04 left to play in the second quarter to give the Blue Devils a 14-7 halftime lead.
