July 4 begins with a bang

There is no shortage in Fourth of July events in Oxford this year with new and old favorites beginning on Wednesday that will honor veterans, raise money for area organizations and speak to the spirit.

Fourth of July Events

Wednesday
Mississippi State Veterans Home Celebration
9 a.m.: Welcome by Sgt. Stephen Patrick Roberts
9:30 am.: Balloon release
10 a.m.: Music by Vernon Arnold
Noon: cookout
1:30 p.m.: Scholars bowl with residents and staff
2 to 4 p.m.: Carnival with food, games and music
Community events
6 p.m. Ecumenical Service: Paris Yates Chapel, University of Mississippi campus, sponsored by the Church Women United of Oxford-Lafayette
7:30 p.m.-midnight: Firecracker Ball featuring The Mustache Band; The Lyric Theater
Thursday
7:30 & 8:30 a.m.: Stars & Stripes on the Square 5K run and Family Fun Run; Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society Fundraiser; Oxford Square
9:30 a.m.: Children’s Parade; Oxford Square
4 p.m.- 9 p.m.: Picnic, vendors, entertainment and other activities in the Grove
6 p.m.: Patriotic Ceremony; in the Grove
9 p.m.: Fireworks display over the Oxford-University Stadium (July 2, 2013, Page 1)
