A good starting point. That’s how Brian O’Neal described his first season as Ole Miss’ track and field coach. The Rebels finished eighth in the nation last week at the annual NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. It was the best finish in school history but made possible thanks to spectacular efforts of just two athletes, sprinter Isiah Young and pole vaulter Sam Kendricks.
Young scored 14 of the team’s 24 points and he won’t be back next season. Kendricks, a sophomore, will return but it’s clear that the athletes O’Neal redshirted this spring, coupled with a large recruiting class, are needed to get the team ranked higher. (June 14, 2013, Page 6A)
