Mayers, Turner sign pro contracts

This weekend’s draft happenings probably didn’t come as a surprise to most.

After being plucked in the first three rounds of the Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft, Stuart Turner and Mike Mayers decided to forego their senior seasons at Ole Miss and sign professional contracts over the weekend.

Turner, selected 78th overall by the Minnesota Twins, signed Thursday for $550,000, $153,000 less than the assigned pick value.

Saturday, Mayers signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. The right-hander, drafted 93rd overall, signed for $510,000, $47,900 less than his assigned pick value.
