Mathis gets second chance, signs with Houston Astros

His senior season didn’t quite go as expected, but Tanner Mathis will end up playing pro ball after all.

A year ago, the Rebel outfielder turned down an opportunity to sign with the Houston Astros after being selected in the 27th round of the MLB First-Year Players Draft.

Actually, he had verbally committed to the Astros for a few minutes but called back to tell them he had a changed his mind and wanted to return to Ole Miss for his senior season.

Monday, although he went undrafted in the 2013 MLB Draft, Mathis ended up signing with the same team he spurned a year before.

After the 40-round draft came and went and Mathis wasn’t selected, Mathis went on the offensive and began reaching out to scouts in his phone.
