Lafayette’s tennis team had two tandems make runs through the MHSAA Class 4A tournament this week.
The boys duo of Jacob Roberts and Hunter Knight fought back to defeat Houston’s team 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 before losing to Amory 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.
A youthful mixed doubles team of 10th grader Brett Bowen and eighth grader Abby Arrington also turned some heads by defeating Houston 6-2, 6-4 before falling to New Albany 6-3, 6-1.
“For them to compete like they did was great,” LHS coach Debbie Swindoll said. “The fact they were able to win a round and advance was icing on the cake.”
With all four players returning, Swindoll said she’s excited about getting back to work with her team.
“I think it was particularly great for my younger kids, and to see the level of competition it takes to make a run, hopefully it’s going to make us hungrier to work for next year,” she said. (May 17, 2013, Page 6A)
