A couple of former area baseball standouts helped lift the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers to a MACJC series win over Jones County Junior College Sunday. The Rangers defeated No. 19 Jones 5-3 and 11-9 over the weekend to advance to the MACJC State Tournament that begins Thursday at Pearl River.
Former Oxford High standout James Lear scored three runs and had two hits in the 11-9 win that improved the Rangers to 29-14 and 17-6 at home, including winning 10 straight. Former Water Valley standout Walt McCullough had a single in the win as well. Ole Miss signee Cody Reed helped the Rangers garner a 1-0 series lead by logging seven innings of work. Reed (7-2) finished with six strikeouts to break the single-season school record for strikeouts with 86. He also tied the school record for wins in a career with 15.
The Bobcats took a 5-0 lead in the second game before the Rangers rallied by scoring a single run in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth. NWCC took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Tanner Cable then held the Bobcats to just one run to earn the save. (May 6, 2013, Page 7A)
