Oxford HS track & field squads place second in 5A

Depth coupled with some fantastic individual efforts helped produce two second-place finishes for the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers at Saturday’s MHSAA Class 5A state meet held at Pearl High School.

The Lady Chargers, who had won the last three state titles, finished with 74.5 points. Pearl won the meet with 123.5 points. Canton, who won the 5A North Half title, finished third to the Lady Chargers with 62 points. New Hope was fourth with 53 while Starkville was fifth with 52.

The Chargers, meanwhile, had an early lead coming out of the field events before Canton overtook them late. Canton, who won the 5A North Half title at Oxford May 4, garnered 89 points to the Chargers’ 76. Pearl (72), McComb (66) and Starkville (47) rounded out the top five in 5A boys.
