A home track advantage only went so far for the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers Saturday at the MHSAA Class 5A North Half track meet. Both OHS teams fared well and qualified a number of athletes for Friday’s 5A state meet in Pearl, but competing at Bobby Holcomb Field couldn’t produce first-place finishes for either team.
Canton won both meets, with the Lady Tigers garnering 127 points compared to Oxford’s 109.5. The Tigers, meanwhile, finished with 148 points compared to the Chargers’ 134. Rounding out the top five schools in the girls’ division were Starkville (75), New Hope (71) and Lanier (52).
Center Hill (75), Starkville (73) and Callaway (63) finished three through five on the boys’ side.
The 6A North Half meet was also held Saturday at OHS. Madison Central won the boys’ title over Tupelo with 147 points while Clinton won the girls’ title with 107 points compared to 97 for second-place finisher Murrah.
The top four finishers in each event advance to compete in Friday’s state meet. First-place finishes were awarded 10 points. Second-, third- and fourth-place finishes garnered eight, six and five points for teams respectively.
