BLOG — Being at home made a big difference for the Oxford Chargers on the first day of the MHSAA Class 5A boys golf tournament Wednesday afternoon.Oxford finished the first of two rounds at the Ole Miss Golf Course with a 323, good for first place and nine strokes ahead of West Jones heading into Thursday’s second round. The Chargers are the defending state champions in 5A and last year, they were nine strokes off first place.
Ben Hubbard led the Chargers with a round of 78. He was followed by Ward Toler’s 80. Ridgeland’s Steven Eilders had the best individual round of the day with a 74. Ole Miss’ course is par 72 and is currently playing at 6,800 yards for the tournament.
Play will resume Thursday morning at 8. Twelve teams and one individual, South Jones’ Cole Vaughn, are competing. (May 1, 2013)
