Area fencers show out at Double Decker tournament

The Oxford fencing team (pictured, right) dominated the annual Double Decker Fencing Tournament, a United States Fencing Association (USFA) event, held April 27.

Max Keene took gold in the boy’s 14-and-under. Jake Riffe won silver in the same age group.

Elias Addy placed first and Connor Dixon placed second in the boy’s 12-and-under bracket, while Lydia Supple took silver in the girl’s 12-and-under grouping.

Ashni Brown and Aubrey Best placed first and second respectively in the girl’s 10-and-under.

The local team competed with fencers from Huntsville, Ala., Baton Rouge, La., and Jackson.

Oxford High School’s Cindy Torma, competing in her first tournament, claimed the gold medal in the women’s open foil. OHS freshman Isaac Manley placed second in the men’s open foil.

The fencers are coached by Dr. John Matthews, Walter Flaschka and Margarette Davis at the Oxford Fencers Club. (May 8, 2013, Page 9A)
