Shuffield ready for ‘classic’ MMA fight Saturday

BLOG — MMA fighter Codie Shuffield said his matchup with Joe “Bamboo” Wissman Saturday in Tunica will be a classic matchup of a striker versus a grappler.Shuffield, for those that don’t follow his MMA fighting style, is a striker while Wissman is a grappler who likes to use his background in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to defeat opponents. Saturday’s fight will be at the Resorts Casino beginning at 7. (All seats are first come, first served). Shuffield said he felt like he could handle his own if he was taken to the ground, but at the same time, Wissman wasn’t used to being hit as a grappler.

“That changes the dynamic of the fight and a lot of people say … he’s a black belt in Jiu Jitsu … if you can get a hold of him, he goes down a belt and that’s what I’m trying to do,” said Shuffield, who has been training four and five times a week in Southaven to get in shape for the fight. “I try to get into any boxing gym, just bounce around to different gyms.”

Saturday’s fight will not be for his Prize Fight Middleweight title. Shuffield, who normally fights at a higher weight than Wissman, referred to the bout a “catch weight” match.

“He walks around at 170 and 185 and he wanted me to come down to 180,” Shuffield said, who added the key to defeating a grappler is to stifle him. “You can’t let him get his ground. You have to stay real tight, maul him, don’t give him anything. He’s looking for space to throw an arm bar or a triangle. He throws a really good triangle.

A triangle is a submission move in which a fighter gets his legs around an opponent. Shuffield said his game plan is to not let the fight go to the ground.

“I could see him going to the ground when we get in close and just try to hold on to me. He’s very comfortable from his back where as most people are not,” Shuffield said. “I’m just going to have to maul him, do dirty stuff, throw elbows, grind him up. This will be a test if it does go to the ground.”

Cody Person, who has been training with Shuffield, will also be fighting on the card. Following Saturday’s fight, Shuffield said he has a planned title fight on June 22 in Biloxi. (April 26, 2013)
