Oxford’s trip south to Ridgeland produced another win for the tennis team Thursday. The Chargers defeated Ridgeland 6-1 to advance to next week’s MHSAA Class 5A state title match. The opponent for the 18-0 Chargers has not been determined.
In Thursday’s match, the Chargers’ only loss came at girls singles and that was closely contested by Lillian Williams, who lost to Cyan Jones.
Ridgeland’s top two singles players were switched over to doubles play and both were unable to help their partner garner a win. Oxford’s No. 1 boys doubles team of Arlis Williams and Baxter Elliott defeated Cullen McDonough and Jacob Hawkins 7-5, 6-1. The No. 2 boys doubles team of Will Swindoll and Callan Shinall beat Darius Kent and Jack Cutler 6-2, 6-3. At boys singles, Quinn Elliott defeated Michael Nguyen 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 1 girls doubles, Oxford’s team of Kara Rose and Embrey Inman outlasted Mia Kent and Brittney Weathersby 6-2, 2-6, (10-5). The No. 2 girls doubles team of Sarah Nash and McClellan Davis won 6-3, 6-0 over Kealyn Edwards and Jerra Harris. Rounding out the wins for the Chargers were the mixed doubles team of Robert Nance and Grace Ann Jones, who beat Trey Martin and Xavier Sowery 6-1, 6-0.
