Lafayette’s youth didn’t show on the tennis court Tuesday as the Commodores defeated Cleveland 4-3 on the road in the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs. LHS coach Debbie Swindoll praised her team’s effort, labeling the win a great accomplishment.
The Commodores (7-5 overall) earned three of their four wins in doubles play. The most competitive of the three wins came at No. 2 boys doubles as the team of Nathan Hollis and Tanner Odom rallied to defeat Austin Joost and Daniel Woo 6-7, 7-5 (10-8).
The No. 2 girls doubles team of Brittany Mann and Abbey Pate dispatched Mary Parker Janoush and Shelby Swafford 6-2, 6-3. Lafayette’s final doubles point came from the mixed duo of Garrett Reed and Abby Arrington defeated Parker Joost and Ashley Brandon Hordon 6-1, 6-4.
The Commodores’ final victory came from Brett Bowen in boys singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Cole Thomas. In girls singles, Lafayette’s Sadie Wilson lost 6-0, 6-0 to Frances Varner. At No. 1 boys doubles, Lafayette’s Jacob Roberts and Hunter Knight lost 7-6 (7-4), 5-7 (11-13) to Nick Bosworth and Will Hardman.
At No. 1 girls doubles, Cleveland’s Merrill Dean Rogers and Lorna Leigh Rogers defeated Cara Anne Sallis and Lindsey Lott 6-1, 6-1. (April 17, 2013, Page 9)
