Cleveland edges out Lafayette

A tight match that served as a preview to the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs didn’t go in Lafayette’s favor Monday at the courts behind Oxford-University Stadium.

The Commodores lost 4-3 to Cleveland, the team it opens the playoffs against. Brett Bowen won one of the two singles matches, defeating Cole Thomas 6-2, 6-2.

The No. 1 boys doubles team of Jacob Roberts and Hunter Knight defeated Will Hardman and Nick Bosworth 6-2, 6-3, while Lafayette’s mixed doubles team defeated Parker Joast and Ashley Braden Horton 6-2, 6-3. Cleveland’s Frances Varner beat Sadie Wilson 6-1, 6-0 in girls singles.

The No. 1 girls doubles team of Lorna Leigh Rogers and Merrill Dean Rogers beat Brittany Mann and Abbey Pate 6-0, 6-1, while the No. 2 girls doubles team of Mary Parker Janoush and Shelby Swafford topped Cara Anne Sallis and Lindsey Lott 6-3, 6-4.

The most competitive match of the afternoon, and the one that decided the victory for CHS, was at No. 2 boys doubles where Daniel Woo and Austin Joost rallied to beat Lafayette’s Nathan Hollis and Tanner Odom 1-6, 6-4 (10-2). Up next for LHS (6-4 overall) is a match with Ripley. (April 2, 2013, Page 9)
