Chargers edge Tupelo to remain unbeaten

Oxford’s tennis team remained unbeaten this season Tuesday but had to survive a push from Tupelo to do it.

The Chargers beat the Golden Wave 4-3 to improve to 12-0 on the year. Oxford defeated Pontotoc 7-0 before playing at Tupelo. Both matches were on the road. Victories for the Chargers against Tupelo were provided by Grace Ann Jones at singles, 6-4, 6-1.

The No. 1 boys doubles team of Will Swindoll and Robert Nance won 6-4, 6-0. The No. 1 girls doubles team of Sarah Nash and McClellan Davis won 6-2, 6-3, while the mixed doubles team of Baxter Elliott and Kara Rose rebounded from a 3-6 loss in the first set to post a 7-5 (10-4) win. In the win over Pontotoc, Nance won the won his singles match, 4-6, 6-2, (11-9).

Rose won the girls singles match, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Elliott and Swindoll won 6-1, 7-5. Arlis Williams and Callan Shinall won the other boys doubles match, 6-4, 6-1. Jones and Nsh won their match 6-4, 6-3, while Davis and Emily Morgan teammed up to post a 6-2, 6-3 win. In mixed doubles, Embrey Inman and Baxter Elliott won 6-2, 6-0. Up next for the Chargers is a home matchup with New Albany Thursday at 4 p.m. The annual crosstown tennis showdown with Lafayette scheduled for Thursday has been moved to Monday at Avent Park. (April 3, 2013, Page 9)
