A fifth straight win in Division 2-5A play Friday night kept the Oxford Chargers in first place and clinched a spot in the upcoming Class 5A playoffs.
Oxford defeated West Point 10-2 and then capped off a 2-0 weekend Saturday with a 9-4 home win over Alcorn Central. In the win over West Point, the Chargers got two runs in the second and third innings to get an early lead and then put the game away with a four-run sixth inning. Aundrel Turner paced the Chargers’ offense with three RBIs, while Steven Whitfield also drove in two runs. Jack McClure, Jason Barber and Turner each had doubles, while Turner also had a triple. Barber earned the win on the mound as he gave up just two hits in five innings of work. Barber finished with seven strikeouts against just one walk. Whitfield came on to record the last two innings of work on the mound. In the win over Alcorn Central, Hunter Roth led the team with four RBIs and three hits.
Henry Webb, McClure, Pittman Phillips and William Elliott each had a double. Roth got the win by logging 5.2 innings of work on the mound. Phillips garnered the save by finishing the game out. Roth had five strikeouts, while Phillips struck out two of the four outs he recorded.
