VIDEO BLOG — Amazing. Courageous. Gritty. Determined. Any and all of these words help describe the way the Water Valley Blue Devils played in their MHSAA Class 3A playoff series with Belmont over the weekend. After defeating the Cardinals, who advanced to the 3A North Half series last year, 1-0 on Friday night, WVHS found itself in a decisive third game Saturday afternoon at Blue Devil Field. Belmont was able to even the series thanks to a 12-2 win in Game 2.
The third game didn’t start like the Blue Devils (18-10 overall) were hoping as ace Cody Greer gave up three runs, but they rallied, behind a solo home run from Dalvin Caldwell, the red-hot day at the plate provided by shortstop Cole Camp and others such as Skyler Defer, who made contributions at the plate, on defense and on the mound in relief of Greer.
Greer ended up garnering the win, a night after earning a save at Belmont, while Defer came on to get the last out with two runners on to earn the save, a night after he won the opener.
Camp, meanwhile, went 6-for-7 at the plate in the two games combined to pace the offense. Below is a video with a few thoughts from Cole, the team’s most experienced player, and what winning the series means moving forward. WVHS will play No. 1 seed Independence in the next round, which begins Thursday evening at IHS.
