OHS runs away with 5A North Half title

For the second straight season, the Oxford Chargers are the Class 5A North Half champions in powerlifting. Oxford set a record in points (62) as seven of 12 lifters finished first overall in the meet held Saturday in the OHS gym.

A total of nine North Half records were set in the meet, while eight individual marks were broken. Kevin Whitney, who competed in the 198-pound class, broke the squat record with 535 pounds. Challen Griffin broke three records in the 275-class with a 580 squat, 605 deadlift and total weight of 1,470. Joel Forrester broke the bench press record in the 308 class with a lift of 355. Clifton Smith, like Griffin, also had three records he broke in the super heavyweight class. Smith finished with a record 605 in squat, 605 deadlift and 1,565 total. All of this comes on the heels of the Chargers winning the region title last month.
